SECTION 19 • TRAILER WIRING
From RV Expert Mark Polk of RV Education 101 www.rvonlinetraining.com
TIP #1
If you have a pop-up, travel trailer or fifth wheel trailer, the 12-volt DC chassis
system gets its power from the tow vehicle battery when the trailer wiring
harness is plugged into the tow vehicle trailer receptacle. This operates the
trailers tail-lights, brake lights and turn signals. The tow vehicle alternator
will also charge the trailer battery if a charge line is wired into the trailer
receptacle. The trailer brakes are activated through use of the electronic
brake controller mounted in the tow vehicle. If it’s a motorhome the 12-volt
DC chassis system gets its power from the RV starting battery.
TIP #2
If you have a 7-way plug on your tow vehicle and you have a utility trailer
with a 4 or 6-way plug there are adapters that go from the 7-way to the 4 or
6-way plug so nothing needs to be rewired.
